Berry wines

The Finnish wine culture is much older than often expected. In fact, evidence has been found that Finns drank wine as early as 300 AD. Berry wines, which are relatively rare internationally, are Finnish specialties. Currently, there are approximately fifty registered local wineries that produce berry wines that contain 13 percent alcohol or less.

The production method of berry wines is different from traditional grape wines. For instance, no sulfur is used in the production, but some extra water, sugar and yeast are needed. Wine is made from frozen berries that can be either cultivated or wild. As pesticides are very seldom used, ingredients are pure.

The taste of Finnish berry wines can be compared to the finest red wines. However, there is no need to compare them to traditional wines, and in fact, berry wines should be appreciated as their own, unique category.

So, how about a glass of wine made of frozen lingonberries or crowberries?
